Expat chef Annamaria Forgione (a Neapolitan) launched an outlet of her pizzeria cum restaurant in Kolkata, in 2005, a decade after her first one in Kathmandu (where Richard Gere and Sting have eaten). At the time, Fire and Ice’s thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas were a novelty few in the city could resist. Plus, there was wine! The novelty factor has worn out now, but this stylish restaurant on Russell Street continues to be a top pick for those looking for a genuine Italian meal. The menu extends far beyond their signature pizzas to include everything from crostinis and bruschettas to pastas, risottos and paninis made with fresh-baked focaccia. The focus is on authentic, home-style food, the kind ‘nonna’ makes. The only local touch to their menu is the Fire of Bengal pizza topped with spicy mutton, green chillies and coriander leaves – it is one of their bestsellers.
