The Round Up of the Food Scenario in Kolkata

When it comes to food, going back to the roots is one of the often tried and successful methods to continue to delight the customers and while the innovation and adoption of different dishes will always be a regular exercise, re-introducing long forgotten dishes is also a welcome change. In the early days, The Hub, the all-day dining in Taj Bengal Kolkata used to be called The Esplanade which opened in 1989 and had some eternal favourites with the guests such as chicken in basket, gondola boat banana split, prawn cocktails and many more. Now after two decades, The Hub has introduced some of the old all time favourites in their menu such as vegetable au gratin, pao bhaji and definitely chicken in the basket. There are lots of stories with this dish and it will definitely bring a smile on the faces of the old timers of Taj Bengal.

While the entire country joined the frenzy of Rio Olympics, it was obvious that the restaurant outlets also would not be far behind in en-cashing on the mood. The three food outlets of Vedic Village namely – Yagna, Agnee and V Den celebrated – Road to Rio. Selected food items and mainly nibbles selected from all across the world were served to the guests. The menu included mushroom ragout, prawn olivette, think Thai pot rice, slow roasted lamb croquette, chocolate volcano, stuffed mushroom cap, provolone and mushroom grilled chicken, to name a few.

Two more new restaurants opened up this month which are worth mentioning and will surely continue to delight the food lovers of the city in the coming days. Calcutta Stories opened up in Keyatala Road with a purpose of re-introducing the old Kolkata cuisine. Popular delicious dishes from Armenian, Jewish, Anglo Indian and Parsi cuisines are presented to people of Kolkata along with some old forgotten continental Kolkata dishes. So, walk in here with the expectation of getting the best of both the worlds. While the Jewish, Armenian and Parsi platters are assortments of some of the best dishes from the cuisines, from old Kolkata, classic European dishes that one can wish for are there, such as the chicken ala kiev, mixed grill, prawn cocktail and many many more with baked Alaska, bread pudding, tiramisu and others. Hotel Hindustan International opened up a new café Bar called UG Cafe Bar. The place which remains open from 1 pm has youngsters as the target group. One can drop in for a quick lunch with some great options for coffee such as cappuccino with chocolate, café Americano or Irish dancing coffee. A place which also has good music, one can select from different types of thin crust pizzas – both in vegetarian and non vegetarian options.

The most exciting news which Kolkata can wait for is 2 new food and beverage brands entering Kolkata. While Spiceklub, the vegetarian place which infuses molecular gastronomy in the food for the guests opens its door in Kolkata soon, Mamagoto, the fun Asian eating place which won the Award of Best Standalone Oriental restaurant 2016 and best food chain of 2016 in EazyDiner Awards, is opening in Park Street and that too by the side of Spiceklub. After 4 cities and 11 outlets across India, let us hope it does to Park Street – what Masala Library did to Connaught place.
