Hometown Café was launched in an interesting stage of Mumbai's dining out history. This was after the Thai restaurant boom of the late 90s and before the surge of Asian (Far Eastern) restaurants which came up post 2012. It was one of the earliest places in the city to focus on Malaysian food. However, an untrained staff (not really familiar with Malaysian food), local ingredients (no pork on the menu which is big in the Chinese side of Malaysian food), it got a mixed response among the small group of people in the city who have eaten Malaysian food in Malaysia. For others it was a nice place to grab a drink with some Chinese bar snacks and then move on to more 'familiar' dishes such as spaghetti bolognaise, Caesar salad and penne pesto. In other words, a restaurant with not a very clear story line.
