The owners, a husband-wife duo, have virtually imported the legendary Tung Nam, a family-run Chinese eatery in the Tiretti Bazaar area in Central Kolkata, to this part of the city. Tak Heng’s kitchen works in collaboration with Tung Nam’s and is headed by the same chef – and that perhaps explains its growing popularity. It is an unpretentious place with a decidedly homely atmosphere and minimalist red and white interiors reminiscent of old Chinese eateries – perfect for long, leisurely meals. The menu has most of the Tung Nam favourites in place, with a few new additions (try the whiskey-soaked drunken chicken wings) and a sprinkling of Thai specialties. The fish in huamei sauce (a special sauce made with shrimps and Chinese prunes) and diced pork cooked in rice wine with pickled mustard greens are good picks. But, original Tung Nam bestsellers such as the pork wanton soup (they make good wontons in general) and roast chilli pork, are easily the best dishes here.
