Mahabelly is a play on Mahabali - the patron demon-god of Malayalis. The festival of Onam is celebrated to mark Mahabali’s return from the netherworld to his beloved kingdom of Kerala. Mahabelly brings dishes from across the length and breadth of Kerala in a fun, easygoing Saket restaurant. First-timers to Malayali food will be put at ease with helpful hosts around to navigate Mahabelly’s extensive menu. I started with the Syrian Christian dishes of 'Pork Ularthiyathu' and 'Erachi (beef) Fry', which were handsomely fragranced with coconut oil and endlessly moreish with 'Malabar Parottas'. Also, quite impressive was the flaky 'Karimeen Pollichathu' and balanced spicing in the classic 'Kerala Stew', which were somewhat let down by 'Appams' lacking my puffy-centre-crisp-edges gold standard. 'Meen (fish) Moilee' and 'Chemmeen Manga' (prawn and raw mango) curries were as good as you can expect in Delhi with a savoury tang and velvety coconut-milk base. For a special treat, enjoy them with 'Kappa' (Mashed tapioca) and end your meal with a classic 'Payasam'.
