Finally, a new eatery which I truly love for its name, décor and most importantly, food – ‘Jamun’ at Lodi Colony market (with the famous Guppy as its neighbour). As I entered the restaurant, pleasing vibes of a simple abode, probably of Southern India, with accents of Jamun palette, was very welcoming. One look at the menu and you realize, there you are, to celebrate regional diversity and rich heritage of Indian cuisine as you have the choice of authentic dishes from Kashmir to the Deccan. I started my meal with Kashmiri delicacy ‘Bharwa Gucchi’ with mint chutney. It was delicious as tandoor roasted morels were stuffed nicely with water chestnuts and button mushrooms. Next came ‘Ratalu Ki Tikki’ as recommended by Chef Picu, roasted shakarkandi and chana dal with almond crust. Do not miss his signature dish from Covelong, Tamil Nadu - ‘Karuveppilai Curry Leaf Specials’ - wok tossed prawn or lobster with curry leaves, shallots and spices. Mains too have an extensive choice where ‘Shukto’ from West Bengal, 'Nadru Yakhni' from Kashmir and 'Sadhya Avial' from Kerala stand out for vegetarians. 'Chicken Xacutti' (Chef’s Picu family recipe from Goa), 'Jamun’s Butter Chicken' and 'Lamb Paaya Curry' are some of the highlights from a non-vegetarian section. There is a fully loaded bar. One must try their cocktails like 'Jamun Old Fashion' and 'Gin & Tea Punch'; mocktails like 'Jamun Kaanji' and 'Royal Cider'. Check out their small retail space, with organic and artisanal selective produce from various regions of India.
