How many times does it happen that you head to a restaurant for a meal and want to go back right away for your next one! For me, that happens very rarely, but it did for Fort Kochi. Here is a restaurant that has a menu, where every page you spot something you want to try and know that you would not be able to do it all. The menu covers various regions, communities and influences of Kerala – from Malabar to the Kochi-Travancore connection, to the Syrian Catholic community and, of course, the British, Dutch and Portuguese influences. I started off with the 'Pork Varattiyathu' – Chunks of fatty pork tossed in spices, whole and ground, finished off with a drizzle of coconut oil. Of course, I had my eyes on the 'Raw Oysters', but then, the 'Octopus Braised With Kokum And Chilli' won the toss. A delightful mélange of sour and chilli hits makes this one of those dishes you want to order again. For mains, I could not resist the 'Alleppey Neimeen Curry' with seer fish which transported me right into one of those houseboats on the backwaters. 'The classic Chicken Varutharachathu', a coconut masala based chicken curry with the flakiest ever 'Kerala Porottas' to mop up the gravy make a great combination too. For dessert, the famous 'Palada' is made brilliantly here and the 'Chakka Kulfi' is quite the delight if you like jackfruit.
