Relish the flavours of Mumbai and get nostalgic

Street food in Mumbai is immensely popular and this is a city known for its eclectic food mix. From spicy, finger-licking savoury dishes, to some typically sweet ones, there is tremendous variety and something for every palate. Some dishes are typically reminiscent of the flavours of Mumbai and reflect the ethos of the city. One bite of these popular dishes and no matter where you are, you are bound to get nostalgic. Here are my top 5 Mumbai street food dishes and the best places to savour these.

Bohri Keema Pav at SodaBottleOpenerWala, BKC

Keema Pav instantly reminds you of days when one savoured this lip-smacking delicacy at Irani cafes along with a cup of the sweet Irani chai. With few such cafes now remaining in the city, one can now actually relish this at SodaBottleOpenerWala, BKC. Their version though a wee bit sophisticated, boasts of rustic flavours and is well-spiced and will surely wow your palate. This one is sure to take you down the memory lane.

Bombay Gym Batata Especial at 212 All Day, Lower Parel

Who can resist the street side Bambaiya sandwich which comes to your rescue when you have not eaten lunch but need a quick bite? 'Chef Paul Kinny' at 212 All Day café & bar, serves a delicious Mumbai style masala sandwich, albeit with his own characteristic twist. An open layered sandwich, filled with oodles of spicy potatoes topped with cheesy nacho sauce, this version leaves you craving for more.

Pav Bhaji at Sardar Refreshments, Tardeo

Pav Bhaji is a dish every Mumbaikar has an inherent weakness for. Available easily at every roadside corner, the one at Sardar Refreshments is unparalleled. A spoonful of this spicy and tangy, medley of vegetables along with well-buttered pav and you will be transported to your college days.

Kulfi Falooda at Kailash Parbat, Andheri West

Shopping at Crawford market meant a trip to Badshah for Kulfi Falooda, but now one can enjoy this dessert at myriad places. Kailash Parbat serves an authentic and elaborate one, which rekindles childhood memories immediately.

Bhel Puri at Swati Snacks, Nariman Point

This comfort dish with an array of flavours and textures - spicy chutneys is delectable and synonymous with this city. Although street side vendors serve the best ones, if hygiene is a concern, one can head to Swati Snacks in order to enjoy a delicious one in a squeaky clean and pleasant ambience.
