Finding The Best Croissant In Delhi NCR

Buttery, flaky and totally addictive - that is what a good croissant is like. This half-moon shaped Viennese pastry is a bit of a treat for us carb-watchers, but when you find the perfect one, do not hold back, because you are about to bite into a piece of perfection.

Perhaps the best pastry for breakfast – since it comes in both sweet and savoury options, the croissants begs to be paired with a perfect cup of tea or coffee.  A simple butter croissant that needs a slathering of homemade jam and sweet butter or a cheese croissant that just melts in the mouth and pairs so well with eggs. Looking for something sweet? Then the almond croissant or the chocolate croissant is where the answer lies.

The thing to watch out for, however, are the terrible croissants - some with a soggy bottom, others with an uncooked center, some that refuse to rise, others that just reek of margarine. What is the perfect croissant then? A crescent-shaped pastry that has several layers and is puffed-up in the center. The outer layer should be golden brown, slightly crispy and immensely flaky. Take a bite and see the cross-section of the layers inside and you should actually taste butter. And these five places have got them down pat.

Cravity - A small dessert café just off the main market in Hauz Khas definitely has one of the best croissants in town. While it is the almond croissant that has everyone swooning over it, we recommend the ham and brie croissant as well. The sandwich is slathered with sharp mustard filled with a generous portion of brie and then finished under the toaster, making sure the croissant retains its crispiness.

Elma's BakeryMost of the croissants are baked on order, so you have to wait for about 20 minutes before you can actually bite into a hot pastry. Served with home-made berry jam and butter, this is a treat worth waiting for, so go prepared or order in advance.

The Oberoi Patisserie and Delicatessen - Their ham and emmenthal croissanwich is absolutely decadent, but it is their all-French butter croissant that makes the sandwich hard to resist. Better still bring a few back with you and enjoy it slowly over the weekend with your favourite cup of tea as they last really well.

L’Opera - It all started with their Pain au Chocolat or the chocolate croissant. Rich, buttery pastry with dark chocolate in the centre. The best part about this croissant is the generous amounts of chocolate which ensure you get a bit of sweetness in each bite.

The Artful Baker - This bakery boasts of an entire croissant menu – almond, cheese, chocolate but it is their whole wheat croissant which is the game changer. Ask for their tomato basil and mozzarella sandwich in this pastry and you know you’re in for a treat.
