All cities and towns have their own special street foods but when street food gets really popular it gets served even in top restaurants. Pav Bhaji or Bhaji Pav is one such street food. It has its origins in Mumbai in the mid-1800’s, where it was first prepared to satisfy hungry traders and mill workers at odd hours when other eateries were closed. The traders of Gujarati and Marwari origins both being vegetarians looked for vegetarian fare and the Bhaji, often prepared from leftover vegetables in the beginning in a spicy tomato gravy served along with the white bun which was brought over by the Portuguese to Mumbai was a great combination. It caught on and became a popular snack.

Now Pav Bhaji is sold in the streets of Mumbai, almost all cities of Gujarat and all over India. It is a very popular street food though it is still much more served in the Western part of India, chiefly in Gujarat and Maharastra.

Honest is the best-known place for Pav Bhaji in Ahmedabad. This is a chain of restaurants but the outlet at Bodakdev makes the best Pav Bhaji and you get lots of variations of the dish - Cheese Pav Bhaji, Jain Pav Bhaji, Boiled Pav Bhaji, Pav Bhaji in butter and oil and you can order to taste. It is always freshly made and just tastes awesome any time of the day. This place is open from 09.30 am to 01:00 am.

Madhavrao, Prahlad Nagar

Specialising in Maharashtrian food, this restaurant serves lots of snacks of the region and Pav Bhaji naturally is part of their menu. Here you can get Jain Pav Bhaji and the milder version for children and those who do not like their food very spicy. Madhavrao is open from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm

New Bombay Bhaji Pav

Located just opposite Drive-in Cinema Hall, this place is open from 12 noon to 11.30 pm. As the name suggests, New Bombay Bhaji Pav has many versions of the Pav Bhaji, Boiled Pav Bhaji, Jain Pav Bhaji, Special Pav Bhaji, etc, and you can choose from four variations, butter, cheese butter, oil and cheese oil Pav Bhajis. Also, the rates are very affordable.

Bombay Street Cafe

This Café is located right opposite Sahajanand College in Ambawadi area. It is open from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm and it has many different versions of the Pav Bhaji from Paneer Pav Bhaji to Palak Pav Bhaji. You can also get Pav Bhaji with Cheese and dry fruits in it. Located so close to a college, this place is naturally very affordable.

Choice Snack Bar, C G Road

One of the oldest snack joints in the city, Choice Snack Bar has now grown into a chain of ten snack bars but the original place at Municipal Market on C G Road is still a favourite of many who have over the years frequented this place. Choice Snack Bar is open from 09.30 am to 11.30 pm and it has a long list of Pav Bhaji versions on their menu. They make a mean Pav Bhaji. Try it.
