Lodhi Gardens is one of my favourite places to bask in sunshine amidst 500 years of history, blue skies and a photogenic flock of ducks. The neighbourhood has been a canvas for another spectacle. St+Art India foundation had been painting the roads of Lodhi Colony in all the hues of life and it would be criminal to not saunter around these leafy avenues and take in the sights. You are bound to work up an appetite with all that walking and gawking, so here is a nifty to guide to eating around in the Lodhi Art District.

Guppy, Lodhi Colony Market

Classic Japanese fare in a playful space, Guppy is a Lodhi classic. Dig into their signature dishes like Aburi Salmon Nigiri and Maki Rolls, Miso Black Cod and Poke Bowls. Guppy’s Bar has a neat selection of Sake and also whips up fun cocktails, perfect for the season.

Already one of my most visited restaurants of the year, Tres is a cheerful mix of casual elegance and skilful cooking. I always pick their small plates like Chicken Liver Ice Cream, Josper-grilled Chicken Wings and Goat Cheese Bavarois and never leave without indulging in multiple rounds of dessert.

Devan’s, New Khanna Market

In my opinion, Delhi’s best coffee-shop. This family-run coffee depot has been supplying beans to caffeine connoisseurs across the city for over four decades. Devan’s underwent a refit last year and added a small café next to the roastery.

Chidambaram’s New Madras Hotel, Lodhi Colony, South Delhi

Looking for a quick South-Indian ‘Tiffin’? Head to Chidamabaram’s which has been a favourite with Tamilian bureaucrats and MPs for generations. The spartan décor and no-nonsense service will transport your imagination to T Nagar.

Lahori Gate, Lodhi Colony, South Delhi

There’s more to Punjabi food than Pandara Road, and Lahori Gate specializes in food from across the border. The punch in dishes like Lahori Dal and Kunna Meat comes through with the use of whole spices and traditional cooking techniques.

Elma’s Brasserie, Meherchand Market

Elma’s shot into fame riding the Red Velvet Cake craze that hit Delhi almost a decade ago. Nevertheless, their wholesome bakes have consistently been among the best in town. Grab a table next to the window to people watch and dig into High tea with scones and sandwiches.

MI Food Center, Meherchand Market

No seats and you’ll have to jostle at lunchtime, but the Nihari and Chicken Wings at MI Food Centre shall make it worth your while. MI is a great place for a quick takeaway if you’re planning a Kabab-Parantha picnic in Lodhi Gardens.

Dilli Dastarkhawan (Karim’s), India Islamic Centre

Even people familiar with the city’s food-scene are surprised when I tell them that the best Karim’s outpost is not in Old Delhi, but on Lodhi Road. Dilli Dastarkhwan, the open-to-public restaurant inside India Islamic Centre, is run by Karim’s and serves the legendary eatery’s best renditions. Plus, easy parking and convenient seating.

Bonus: Don’t forget to pick up cheese by Flander’s Dairy at Cheese Ball (Meherchand Market), more cheese and groceries Steakhouse and Smoked sausages and Rolled Ham from Pig-Po (both in Jor Bagh Market).
