Plush dining venue delivering a polished take on Japan’s famous robatayaki food

Run by Rainer Becker, famed Chef-turned-entrepreneur who brought swanky Zuma to Dubai, ROKA is also an outpost of its well-established namesake flagship restaurant in London. Considered a sister restaurant to Zuma by many, ROKA is a relaxed and edgy dining destination that is known for bringing its unique style of contemporary Japanese Robatayaki cuisine and urban design to Downtown Dubai. For those of you not familiar with the term, Robatayaki refers to a Japanese method of cooking, similar to barbecue in which items of food are cooked at varying speeds over hot charcoal.

In a city like Dubai that is replete with high-end Asian-fusion restaurants, ROKA still feels like a breath of fresh air because of its unbeatable contemporary flavors and fabulous style. Much like its sister Zuma, this chic venue earns major brownie points for its sleek interiors. Showcasing a blend of elegant wood finishes, brushed concrete, and metal accents, ROKA also has an airy feel to it, all thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows and an open robata area with bar seating from where guests can enjoy all the live grilling and plating action.

When it comes to the food, their menu replicates a majority of signature dishes from its London outlet while also featuring quite a few new innovations that were made keeping the Emirati palate in mind.

For those who are keen on understanding the cuisine on offer at ROKA, here are some of our top recommendations from their menu that are absolutely worth trying:

ROKA Baked Potato with Yuzu Cream & Chives

ROKA special Baked Potato or ‘Bekudopoteto’ as it is referred to in its menu, is nothing short of art. A signature dish of the restaurant wherein the potato is taken from the robata grill, hollowed out, mixed with potato Yuzu Cream and Chives, and placed back inside a triple-fried skin. Topped with a cream that registers as Sour cream at first bite, but when as you go on exploring this textural masterpiece you realize the richer and more playful flavor complexities that are at play here.

Iceberg Salad

Another one of ROKA’s signature preparations, the Iceberg Salad No Wafu is a beautifully plated light dish featuring shredded iceberg leaves, shaped up like a hill, drizzled with a sweet onion dressing, and topped with seaweed. Packing a generous melange of bitter-sweet flavors this is one stellar delicacy that is worth all the hype.

Lamb Cutlets with Korean Spices and Sesame Cucumber

A ‘must try’ robata grill specialty, the ‘Kankoku Fu Kohitsuji’ is simply a revelation! A dish of beautifully charred and tender lamb cutlets prepared with Korean spices and sesame cucumber, this one is a hero dish that has one ROKA many prestigious accolades and most importantly, the adoration of Dubai’s discerning gourmands.

Kampachi (Yellowtail) Salad

Nothing we say in appreciation of this stellar preparation will ever be enough! A treat for eyes as well as your taste buds, this star dish features a delicately sliced Yellowtail which is served with a stunning Yuzu-Truffle dressing. Super fragrant, light, and delicious - perfect to start your meal. The dressing on top is truly addictive. It’s topped with a small amount of grated black Truffle, which further increases the flavor profile of the whole preparation.
