For some of us – Potterheads with a weak spot for good food, the ‘magic’ and ‘wizardry’ began and ended with the myriad, drool-inducing descriptions of the meals in the books, featuring pumpkin pastries, treacle tarts, cauldron cakes and pumpkin juice. Now that the Harry Potter mania has captured our lives once again, what with public readings of the latest book and pictures of the cover trending on social media, joining the bandwagon and adding a gastronomic twist to it was Fat Cat's Café’s ‘Harry Potter menu’ on July 31 – incidentally also the birthday of the boy who lived, and his creator JK Rowling.

On the occasion of the worldwide release of the script of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child in the form of the eighth book, owner Melanie Andrade decided to host a little ‘Hogwarts feast’ of her own. On the request of one of her customers who reminded her about the new tome coming out, she had cooked up Harry Potter-inspired treats at both outlets of her restaurant. While butterbeer cupcakes have always been a Fat Cat’s specialty, this time, the special menu featured a wider range of desserts inspired from the fantasy series.

“We experimented with a few recipes for a week. I had earlier thought of including savouries such as steak and kidney pies in the list but then decided to stick to a dessert menu,” says Melanie. The spread had everything from super-adorable owl cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies with the Deathly Hallows symbols to a refreshing butterbeer shake, concocted from a mixture of caramel sauce and ice cream soda.

The café also organized a ‘sorting ceremony’ by baking cupcakes in four different house colours which were hidden underneath the covers. So, each customer discovered his or her house only after opening their cupcake! “There were quite a few proud Gryffindors and disappointed Hufflepuffs,” Melanie chuckled. Unfortunately, these goodies were only available for one day, but the good news is, they have decided to retain the shake on their regular menu – so next time you are headed here, do not forget to get your butterbeer fix!
