Every month a plethora of new restaurants and cafes crop up across the city but all lose their shine soon enough. A few stand out and become favourites with diners who eat out regularly and eventually find their feet in this big bad world of eateries.


The Looney Lover and Poet

This latest cafe to hit an already populated Khar neighbourhood is the perfect spot for date night. The ambience is simple, unobtrusive and oozes warmth. Lots of colourful painted furniture, walls with whimsical artwork and dream catchers dangling about to inspire the looney lover or poet within you. The menu tries to incorporate dishes from across the globe including a Filipino Style Sisig, Syrian Kibbe and even a Greek-style Spanakopita. The choices are plenty here and, in the 2 months it is been operational, it has become a popular spot for diners.

Flea Bazar Cafe

Despite the number of restaurants and cafes sprawled across the city, the one thing missing is a funky food court. Mind you we are not talking about the ones at a cinema multiplex or a mall, but, a more evolved space that brings together good food and music under one roof. 'Riyaz Amlani' has done just that with his Flea Bazar Cafe in Kamala Mills. It is an enclosed space with a number of different food joints from the famous Lucknow Tunday Kebabs, The Bohri Kitchen, Goila Butter Chicken, Soam and other interesting brands. Plenty of booze at the Social bar and a fun vibe overall. It is buzzing at night and you will have to wait a bit for a table.

Bayroute

Lights shaped like hot air balloons, mosaic-like tiles and brown earthy walls at this Cuff Parade restaurant are all reminders in case you had any doubt that you are dining at a Middle Eastern-inspired restaurant. Bayroute has a menu that features dishes from four different countries, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon and Greece. It is not just that the entire space looks incredibly romantic, especially if you sit outdoors and dine among the fairy lights but the food is incredible. The best way to end a meal here is with a generous serving of Baklava or Zaffrani Milk Cake.


Mango Tree

Thai cuisine is possibly the next big popular choice for diners in Mumbai. Just like there was a wave of Chinese restaurants over the years, it now seems like the Thai are not far behind. The city cannot get enough of Thai food and the latest addition is Bangkok's Mango Tree. Diners cannot seem to get enough of this stylish swish restaurant and its delectable food. Think Pomelo Salad With Grilled Scallops, Old School Tom Yum Soup, Lamb Massaman Curry or even a  Lobster Pad Thai. They are just some of the popular dishes at this trendy restaurant.

Typhoon Shelter

An unusual concept but one that is superbly executed, this restaurant is themed around Typhoon Shelters that you find in Hong Kong and the various cuisine that you find there. Typically, it is a mix of Chinese food from various provinces but the restaurant has given it their own contemporary spin. This space feels like you are dining in an old Chinese tea house in the midst of a storm with great lighting effects, but, the food served here is what will keep drawing you back. The biggest wow factor here are the desserts, they are intriguing and beautifully presented, unlike any other Asian restaurant.
