For any city, the new restaurants opening up are a positive sign of the vibrant market, of the fact that enterprising people are willing to bite the bullet and get into the food business and might create ripples in the otherwise stagnant food market in terms of cuisine and personal favourites. Just like when a restaurant closes, it is not only the business which closes but along some dreams and aspirations are buried, a new restaurant opening is like the news of a new born baby which brings happiness, hope and aspiration. Be it a fine dining restaurant or otherwise, this list of newly opened restaurants in Kolkata are definitely in some news.

Whistling Kettle

It’s not only the famous meat platters of Keventer’s (the nostalgic tripping point of Bengalis in Darjeeling) which has got pork sausages, bacon, ham, salami and sunny side up egg but this all day breakfast joint has tied up with Nuthmalls, one of the premier tea exporters and get ready to be shocked perhaps when you get a tea served in a champagne glass. The interiors replicating Darjeeling may not be able to bring down the temperature of Kolkata but the new restaurant will definitely bring in a slice of Darjeeling to Kolkata.

Deraa The Afghan Rasoi

This new Kolkata restaurant might have opened up a little more than 6 months ago but one must say that this is a very welcome change for Kolkata as they serve some of the most authentic Afghan Cuisine. A small 35 - 40 seater restaurant with interiors which gives you a feel of Afghanistan, this place can be a meat lover’s paradise. Order Chupa Rustam, where the chicken pieces are hidden within the mutton pieces or Gustaba from Kashmir valley or Kabuli Pulao.

Must try dishes - Kabuli Pulao and Sinkandari Raan (the latter only on pre order)

Just Asian

This place has been the home to Wasabee restaurant which has moved to another location and now this opens. A testimony to the changing palate of Kolkata beyond the Kolkata Chinese, some of the Asian dishes which are worth checking out here are - dim sum and Sushi Platters, Nasi Goreng, Chicken Basil Cups and the famous sea food sizzler - Seafood Hibachi.

If after all this food, you feel the calling for dessert and in a mood to try out something funky, then this is a must try place. Under the mentoring of Chef Shaun Kenworthy, this place offers some innovative ice creams, some of them can definitely be categorised under desserts. The Bangla Mania has Mishti Doi, Rosogolla Chunks with Aam Sotto Jujubes. Try out the sorbets, the mocktails and the dragon shots also.

Haagen Dazs Ice Cream

Kolkata might be the last of the metros to welcome Haagen Dazs but it is never too late. The new outlet (second one) in Quest Mall is a 40 seater and perhaps this is what was left in the ice cream segment for Kolkata. With all the popular flavours like Caramel Crunch, Party Hat, Seventh Heaven being present, ice cream just got a more international flavour in Kolkata after London Dairy and Baskin Robbins.
