Forget the heavy iftar food, indulge your sweet tooth in all the wonder dessert during Ramzan

This Ramzan, forget all the usual suspects. Forget that coveted Haleem and skip all the Nalli and Biryani to focus on dessert. We have done articles about all sorts of special menus and where to indulge but this time we are going to only talk about sweet treats and they are some of the very best you will find this season. Ideally, the best places to eat these are any of the popular khao gallis that are full of stalls and street vendors cooking up a storm and you will find plenty from Mohammed Ali Road to Mahim. You can certainly enjoy that but if your more of a restaurant person then this guide should help you.

Malpua - The king of all sweet dishes during the month of Ramzan is undoubtedly the Malpuas. You will see this thick yellow pancakes that are deep-fried and sugary sweet being prepared at almost every nook and corner in popular khao gallis. Large stalls are set up with massive vessels full of hot oil and these pancakes are constantly being churned out. They are a treat and a must this season. You can go on a mini Malpua trail sampling different ones to find the one that suits you best or you can just head straight to Suleman Usman Mithaiwala who is famous for all sorts of sweets but his hot Malpuas are the best.

Phirni - A classic rice pudding made with milk and flavoured with cardamom, almonds and in most cases a lot of saffron is the most popular sweet treat during Ramzan. The real fun is in eating them in the small earthen clay pots they are made in but if you are sceptical you can always enjoy a fabulous Phirni at Punjab Grill or then Persian Darbar. The latter has a lot of Ramzan special dishes including the Phirni and the former while focusing on Punjabi food makes a delicious Kesar Phirni.

Falooda - This tall drink with generous vermicelli, basil seeds, dollops of ice cream and toppings is a signature drink during Ramzan. Milkshakes and juices are equally popular but nothing beat a chilled Falooda and no one does it better than Badshah in Crawford Market. Their Royal Falooda is so heavy that you would think it is a meal in itself. If you are in Mahim then Baba Falooda is equally popular and comes just as loaded.

Umm Ali Om Ali - This Egyptian dessert is incredibly popular all across the Middle East and Gulf region. It is the Arabic version of bread pudding and embellished with chopped nuts. Incredibly popular but you do not find it at many restaurants in the city. The very best Om Ali can be relished at Souk at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Kubani Ka Meetha - Traditionally, a Hyderabadi dessert, it is made from apricots with sugar and saffron and can be cloyingly sweet. Unless you have a fierce sweet tooth it tends to be an acquired taste. At Ummrao at the Courtyard By Marriott Hotel, they tweak this dessert and serve it as a tart. So, the tart pastry is filled with the apricot dessert and topped with a thick layer of Rabri that is baked. Still delicious with all the elements of a Kubani Ka Meetha but in a more elevated form.
