Chicken Cordon Bleu with a French name first originated in Switzerland in the 1940s. Cordon Bleu means Blue Ribbon, which was originally a wide blue ribbon worn by the highest order of Knighthood L’Ordre des Chevaliers du Saint-Esprit (The Order of the Holy Spirit). Later, food made to a very high standard by top chefs who wore cook’s aprons with blue ribbons started being called Cordon Bleu.

There are many variations of this recipe all of which involve cheese, meat and a cutlet. Apart from chicken, this dish is also made with veal or pork. Basically, Chicken breast is flattened and then rolled with ham or bacon with cheese inside it and then deep-fried after being rolled up in bread crumbs. Sometimes this dish can be also baked instead of fried. It is a simple but a classic dish which when made right is a delight. It is often served with a cheesy sauce.
