It is not just about sushi at Yataii, or about the Bento box, rolls, and nigiri. At Yataii, you can indulge in traditional Japanese food and the more modern interpretations of the cuisine. Try something from the Okonomiyaki, the Japanese pancake section. The kaisen okonomi, stuffed with shrimp, squid, red snapper, lobster and flavoured with shichimi (a seven-spice powder), and topped with bonito flakes, is a favourite. And it is a meal by itself. The ebi (prawn) tempura is a little different here. Instead of spicy mayo, the more common accompaniment, it comes with a soy dip and grated radish. The kastudon, a deep-fried pork cutlet with egg, served on top of sticky rice, is comfort food. It does not look like much, but the taste is spot on. You can also ask for it to be made with chicken as well.
